About this work.

This photograph is from a personal project looking into the life of the Thames and its tributaries near my previous home in Deptford, London. This particular shot is of a landing stage that sits next to the former site of the royal dockyard, the start of journeys to war, discovery, fortune and death. The area itself, associated with Henry VIII, James Cook, the Royal Navy and the birth of piracy  became a place of great wealth and then as industry moved away of poverty and crime. Closed to the public for safety reasons the man appeared on the landing stage in a moment and disappeared just as quickly.

Shipbuilding is known to have begun here 1420 with refitting royal ships, and digging of a dock. There had probably been earlier activity. In 1513 Henry VIII set up a naval dockyard here, called the Kings Yard, the southern and eastern part of the site lay on a gravel headland, and it was used as the location of the Tudor storehouse, the first permanent Dockyard building under Master Shipwrights Matthew and James Baker. Under Elizabeth the yard was expanded and was associated with Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind and ships which opposed the Armada. In the Hanoverian period, voyages by James Cook, Martin Frobisher and George Vancouver began here. From Deptford were launched several ships for Nelson’s Navy including ships which were at Trafalgar.

Shot on film, the story telling nature of the contact sheet is used to conjure a sense of narrative - what happened before and what comes after. Physically the negative holds the subject in a time capsule, the textural details are there to reference this tactility.
